Information about Top Level Domain (TLD) Extensions

First, a little information about Domain Names in general. All Domain Names are rooted in policies written and enforced by ICANN (International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). ICANN is a non-profit corporation that was formed to assume responsibility for the IP address space allocation, protocol parameter assignment, domain name system management, and root server system management functions previously performed under U.S. Government contract.

More information about ICANN can be found at their website: www.icann.org

.com

One of the fist three original TLD extensions, .com stands for Commercial. This domain is the most commonly used domain for commercial or business related services.

.net

The .net TLD is also one of the three originals. Originally, the .net extension was only available to Network Service Providers, making it more of a technical extension. It was opened up to public registration in the mid to late 1990's and has since become a very acceptable alternative to the .com extension.

.us

Country codes are also very popular domain extensions. The .us extension is the two letter Country Code for the United States of America.

.biz

Several new TLD Extensions were made available by ICANN in 2001. The .biz extension was added as an accompaniment to the .com extension. This extension is meant for use by businesses around the world.

.info

Also added in 2001, .info is meant for informational Websites.

.org

Another original, .org domains had been reserved only for the use of non-profit organizations. In the mid 1990's, Network Solutions, at that time the only domain registrar, opened the .org extension to registration by any person or entity. Network Solutions has since been purchased in whole by Verisign.

.cc

.CC is an extension that started to gain popularity about 1998, mainly through pop-up advertising and SPAM email marketing. This 2 letter country code was originally reserved only for the country of Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The registrar duties for .cc domain extensions has since been purchased by Verisign.

.tv

Originally, the .tv extension was the property of Ministry of Finance and Tourism of Tuvalu. The .tv country code became popular among television stations around the world, and registrar duties for this domain have since been purchased by Verisign.

.edu

The .edu extension is one of the original TLD extensions and as it was originally, it is still reserved for licensed educational institutions. CWS can help you register a .edu domain, but you must be able to provide documentation of being a licensed educational institution and there are extra fees associated with the registration of this extension because of the extra paperwork involved with the verification process. CWS is not able to guarantee your institutions approval for the registration of ay TLD that carries this extension. Please contact us for more information.

*$20.00 per year rate is available only on 5 year domain registrations.
